"I highly recommend StockTouch if you are even the slightest bit interested in the stock market. Those that care about the stock market for business or personal reasons would also love this app. It’s just a great tool for watching over the markets, and easily puts Apple’s own Stocks app to shame." Christine Chan - Appadvice.com

Q & A

Visible Market Inc. is a data visualization software company that creates groundbreaking mobile apps for the financial markets. Their newest product StockTouch is an iPad/iPhone app that allows users to quickly understand in a very visual way the overall state of the stock market, and then instantly zoom in and out of current market data for individual stocks. StockTouch features a groundbreaking interface that combines design, animation and high performance, bringing together the power of data visualization and financial market data.

What inspired you to create StockTouch? How did your past experience in finance contribute to the direction and development of the app?
We’ve always felt that finance pros had a vastly greater understanding of financial markets, allowing them to make superior investment decisions for themselves. One part of the disparity comes from how information is presented, and another part comes from the reality that financial analytics can be complicated. Our apps use a mobile-touch data visualization engine to recast live financial information with new vibrant visual formats.

The design of StockTouch is elegant yet user friendly. What influenced the design process?
We are big fans of the leading thinkers in data visualization: Edward Tufte, Hans Rosling and David McCandless. Tufte: "The commonality between science and art is in trying to see profoundly – to develop strategies of seeing and showing "

Do you think that StockTouch is able to make a subject that is often intimidating, more approachable and accessible to the masses?
Yes, we hope so. Live markets generate vast amounts of statistical data. Our apps try to capture those statistics, make them beautiful and more understandable to anyone. Everyone is affected by our financial markets, and a greater understanding of our markets by a larger audience should have a positive influence on the economics of our society. Democratized market information benefits us all, so we are happy to be contributing to this movement.

StockTouch was selected by Apple as the Top iPad Finance App for 2011 via Apple’s App Store Rewind 2011! How did it feel to be recognized by Apple and how does that kind recognition influence the direction of company?
Very exciting. We are excited to be developing apps for awesome products like the iPad2 and iPhone4S, and are thrilled to have this recognition from Apple.

What new features are you adding to StockTouch for 2012?
New visualizations, watch lists, portfolios, new markets, international, and socialization.

Who would you say is your target audience with this app?
StockTouch is a new way to consume business information. It tells you everything that’s happening for companies, sectors and markets as a whole. It turns the iPad into a gadget. Our target is anyone interested in business and finance, from reading the news to trading stocks.

Where did the idea of displaying Stock information in this way emerge from?
We set out to make a financial heat map which was tactile, fluid, beautiful and also useful. We created a statistical data ontology using 9 major sector tiles composed of 100 individual stock tiles apiece, each organized in a spiral, which gave our “map” a sense of geography and symmetry. With that as the canvas, we added color to show degrees of correlation and movement, then loaded that into a game engine.

How much easier do you feel StockTouch makes navigating this kind of information?
We believe that our touch and zoom-based navigation makes rapidly flying through a large data set very natural. It’s pretty much impossible to get lost while using StockTouch because it uses a map metaphor, and stays consistent with that metaphor. If you want to “go back out”, you simply pinch and zoom to reorient yourself. Every StockTouch experience is unique. All at once, 9 sectors, 900 companies, 12,600 tiles of heat, 6300 charts, 10,800 news stories, all updated every 5 minutes.

Were there any apps that inspired you during development of StockTouch?
We looked to find the most radiant, beautiful and dynamic apps that had been developed for the iPad, and wanted to bring that innovation and creativity to finance. We love the music apps Reactable and SoundVision, which turn the iPad into a music device. We are big fans of Flipboard and Reeder. Of course, the success of touch-based games is inspirational.

Was the aesthetic for StockTouch as important to you as the functionality?
We are inspired by data visualization and its thought leaders Edward Tufte, Hans Rosling and David McCandless.

"It's an enormous force when we animate our statistics… The database hugging in public institutions is hampering innovation." – Hans Rosling

"We are in a blizzard of information - we need to be able to design ways of visualising data in a way that can make them beautiful, that can make them tell a story, that can make them more understandable." – David McCandless

We started with the goal of maximizing aesthetic, dynamics, data speed, data usefulness all together to create the story of financial data out of the statistics. Most of our compromises were made because we hit up against the hardware and software limits of the device, memory, processing speed, and mobile data transfer. We had to adjust for that.

Like most stock apps you can’t buy and sell stocks using StockTouch. Is there any particular reason why this seems to be avoided?
Our view is the iPad is a data consumption device – it’s great for videos, reading news, playing games. We found the way financial information is typically presented to be confusing: we felt we could do something more immersive than index summaries and line charts.

We believe StockTouch is for everyone, not just traders– college students deciding on careers, jobseekers looking for new opportunities, salespeople calling on clients, retired people, entrepreneurs starting new businesses. A lot of people benefit from understanding stock markets. We want to our app to elevate understanding of companies and economics. We believe this experience is more enriching than an app that’s designed for trading.

Do you already have plans for the future of StockTouch or other new apps in development that we can look forward to?
Yes! We plan to make StockTouch better and better, with new preference settings and the ability to watch stocks and portfolios. We are adding more analytics and other international geographies. As for other apps, you bet, stay tuned.
